Oscar winning actress Patricia Arquette during her speech asked for wage equality amongst men and women in Hollywood and her words have also found acceptance in Bollywood with many actresses speaking against the wage inequality in Hindi film industry. But it seems Sonam Kapoor begs to differ from the other actresses on the same.
Though the actress is all game for the wage equality but at the same time she says that things won't change until and unless the films with women actresses as the lead get as big opening at the box office as the hero-based films.
The actress was quoted by a leading website, "It's mathematics really. There is something called a market price in our industry. It does not make economic sense for the producer to give me the same price as the lead actor of the same category. Say a Ranbir Kapoor film will open to Rs.10 crore on Friday, but my films will open significantly low. So it's important for the producer to earn the money invested. It makes mathematic sense."
Though Bollywood has seen women based films like Queen and Mary Kom in the recent past which have not just done good business at the box office but also received acclaim from the critics. But there is no denying the fact that there are only a handful of such films. And, it will still take some time for such films to compete with hero-based films at the box office.
